Guan Eng to bring up khat issue in Cabinet meeting this Wednesday

Press Statement by DAP Secretary-General and MP for Bagan Lim Guan Eng in Kuala Lumpur on 12.8.2019:

I Will Raise Again In This Coming Cabinet Meeting On Wednesday To Review The Implementation of Jawi Illustrations Or Seni Khat In The Standard 4 Bahasa Malaysia Textbooks.

I will raise again in this coming Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, a proposal to review the implementation of Jawi illustrations or seni khat in the Standard 4 Bahasa Malaysia textbooks. This matter will be raised in Cabinet and is not connected as to whether a Minister did or did not say that many Ministers disagreed with its introduction to Chinese and Tamil primary schools.

When I raised this issue in Cabinet last week on 7 August 2019, Cabinet had only agreed to make the introduction of Jawi illustrations in the Standard 4 Bahasa Malaysia textbooks not compulsory but optional, reduced from 6 to 3 pages and not to be examined. DAP Ministers had voiced in the Cabinet meeting last week, the strong sentiments of the non-Malay community that were unhappy with the Education Ministry for proceeding with the implementation when it was done without prior consultation with stakeholders of Chinese and Tamil primary schools.

Following this latest development and further consultations and feedback from the public, I will raise up the matter again in Cabinet this week.
