Culture and Arts Committee chairman propose the formation of an Arts Council for better coordination

GEORGETOWN Penang Tourism Development, Heritage, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin proposed the setting up of a council to coordinate and promote arts in the state.

He said he had a meeting with Penang Institute and the Dean of the Universiti Sains Malaysia School of Arts to discuss the idea above.

Yeoh Soon Hin made the proposal to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow during a courtesy visit by various arts groups in Penang on July 26.

Eleven representatives who lead by Ombak-Ombak ARTStudio president Prof Dr Tan Sooi Beng paid a courtesy call on the Chief Minister and YB Yeoh yesterday.

Prof Tan suggested a few roles which the Arts Council could do to promote arts in Penang.

Among the suggested roles were nurturing the multiethnic arts, documentation of traditional and contemporary arts and networking with local and international groups are in line with the initial ideas of YB Yeoh.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow told the representatives that the State Exco will study the proposal and would continue to converse with the groups until the Arts Council is formed.
