Anti-telco tower campaign unfounded & akin to anti-vaxxers: assemblyman Chris Lee

It is disappointing to note that certain opposition politicians are attempting to strike fear in the public by citing sources which are not credible and selective reports in their campaign against the erection of telecommunication towers.

As the State has explained many times before this, the Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Field (RF-EMF) emission level from approved telecommunications towers are safe and below the recommended limit of guidelines set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).

These emissions are also categorized as non-ionising radiation, which means that they are low energy and have no deleterious effects on biological molecules. In other words, continuous exposure to these emissions do not cause damage to human tissues and are therefore safe even for senior citizens and children. These claims are also verified by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Further to that, in their statement dated 6 November 2019, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as the regulatory body also assured that they are “always monitoring the construction, placement and radiation level emitted by communications transmitters in Malaysia”.

MCMC also cites the fact that the Malaysian Nuclear Agency (ANM) has conducted transmission level tests across the country and found that radiation levels in areas close to the transmitters are very low and are at a safe level.

Unfortunately, those leading the campaign against telecommunications transmitters choose to turn a blind eye to facts that are widely accepted all over the world, including by all the various regulatory agencies in Malaysia. Furthermore, they continue to cite selective reports to justify their claims despite the fact that there exists a body of around 24,000 research studies conducted worldwide which prove the safety of RF-EMF emissions.

The leaders of the anti-telco campaign are using fear tactics akin to those used by anti-vaxxers who claim that vaccinations are linked to problems such as autism. As with all fields of sciences, there will inevitably be outlier findings. However, all responsible authorities have to be guided by the 99% and not the 1%. Similarly, if the Ministry of Health suddenly adhered to anti-vaxxers, imagine the consequences when hundreds of thousands of Malaysian children begin to succumb to diseases that should not even exist in our country.
