Beware of unscrupulous salesmen, says Phee

PENANG does not endorse nor approve the use of any polystyrene or non-biodegradable containers that are deemed harmful for the environment.

State Health, Welfare, Caring So-ciety and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said that several hawkers had told him that some unidentified salesmen were trying to sell ‘biodegradable polystyrene’ containers, claiming that they were approved by the state government.

“We do not endorse or approve the use of these containers. They claim to be ‘biodegradable’, but in fact they are not,” said Phee.

He added that improper disposal of these polystyrene containers could lead to flash floods and the spread of dengue as the clogged drains are a suitable breeding ground for aedes mosquitoes.

“I encourage the people to bring their own containers or tiffin carriers when they buy food from the hawkers,” said Phee.

He said this at a press conference where he also announced an up-coming celebratory dinner for senior citizens in Penang.

Called the ‘Elders Day Celebra-tion 2011,’ the event is co-organised and co-sponsored by the state government and the Society of (The) Active Generation of Elders (SAGE).

It will be held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral Hall on Jalan Besi (off Jalan Mesjid Negri) on Oct 9 at 7pm. The event is open to both SAGE members and senior citizens.

It is on a first come, first servedbasis, and each participant is required to pay a subscription fee of RM30.

Participants are encouraged to dress in their cultural and traditional attire.

SAGE president Chin Sek Ham said that the event was to show appreciation to the senior citizens.

“We have held this event since 2008 and there is great response. It is an opportunity for the senior citizens to enjoy themselves and take a trip down memory lane,” he said.
