No federal funds yet to enhance water pressure at low-cost flats
THE Penang government has yet to receive an allocation from the Federal Government to improve the water pressure at the low-cost Rifle Range and Kampung Melayu flats.
State Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai (DAP — Ayer Itam) said this when winding up the motion of thanks to the Yang di-Pertua Negri’s opening address.
R.S.N. Rayer (DAP — Seri Delima), who had asked him about the proposed allocation, then stood up and said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak made the promise during his visit to Penang last month and that legal action could be taken if the latter fails to fulfil his promises.
“Do not let it be an empty promise,” he said.
Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah (BN — Seberang Jaya) interjected, saying that when such an announcement was made by the prime minister, it would be handled by the Implementation Coordination Unit.
On the high property prices in the state, Wong said the sales and rental prices in Penang were stable contrary to claims that there was heavy speculation in the market.
Jagdeep Singh Deo (DAP — Datuk Keramat) had raised concerns over expensive apartments and condominiums in Penang which could only be afforded by expatriates and those registered under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H).
“We should still continue with MM2H but do note that while the expatriates already have their second home, Penangites here cannot even have their first home yet,” he said.
Lau Keng Ee (DAP — Pengkalan Kota) said low medium-cost units should be made available to the local residents instead of leasing it out to foreign workers.
“If expatriates own the high-end condominiums while low medium-cost houses are rented out to foreign migrant workers, what sort of property can the local residents afford then?” he questioned.
