Secret letter by Gerakan Youth irks DAP

GEORGE TOWN (Oct 5, 2009) : Penang DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) is upset with Penang Gerakan Youth for writing a “secret letter” to Transparency International (TI), asking it to review its positive remarks about the state government’s anti-corruption efforts.

Penang DAPSY secretary Ng Wei Aik said Penang Gerakan Youth was trying to tarnish the state government’s image and good reputation by writing the letter to the Washington-based International organisation recently.

Among the instances quoted by Penang Gerakan Youth in the letter are the non-declassification of the state executive council meeting’s minutes on the Kampung Buah Pala issue, non-revelation of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s new residence and non-declaration of assets owned by the state executive councillors.

Ng Wei AikNg said that the issues brought up by Penang Gerakan Youth are nothing new.

“(All these) are well accepted by the public except for a few ‘young kids’ from Penang Gerakan Youth. They are opposing for the sake of opposing,” he said during a press conference held at the Penang DAP headquarters today.

“They are trying to mislead the public by using a bundle of wrong facts,” he said.

On Sept 23, TI launched its Global Corruption Report 2009 and commended the island state of Penang for its anti-corruption efforts. TI said that the Penang state is the first Malaysian state government to implement the open tender system for government procurement and contracts.

It also recognised the state government’s directive barring administrators and state executive councillors from making any new land applications and efforts to attract professionals to serve on various boards, such as the Penang State Appeals Board.
