CM: Still wanted to build the proposed PICC but need to allow the right to give their input too

STARTING next year, the Penang Furniture Exhibition (Penfurnex) will be held twice a year – May and October.

Penang Furniture Manufacturers and Dealers Association president Lor Lean Sen said the current exhibition was such a success that there were still about 30% of exhibitors on the waiting list although the exhibition area had been expanded from concourse to the arena this year.

“The annual furniture and furnishing exhibition, now in its 7th year, was held only in the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) concourse level previously.

“With the size of the show expanded from 57 exhibitors last year to 76 exhibitors this year, we are occupying more than 7,400sq m of exhibition space and this is still not enough to fit all of them,” he said in his speech during the opening ceremony at PISA yesterday.

Penfurnex 2010 organising chairman Ng Hooi Lai said the Penang Government had been encouraging the association to make Penfurnex bigger by renaming it as the Penang International Home Exhibition to attract worldwide buyers.

“A world-class exhibition needs a world-class infrastructure so I hope that the state government can build one as soon as possible to develop the international market,” he said.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who officiated the opening, said the state government still wanted to build the proposed RM50mil Penang International Convention Centre (PICC).

“I know that some are criticising why we have yet to start building the PICC but at the same time we need to allow those who oppose the PICC the right to give their input,” he said.

The three-day exhibition, which ends tomorrow, is open from 11am to 9pm.
