Rapid Penang launches real-time bus arrival system
GEORGE TOWN: Rapid Penang has launched its real-time bus arrival display system, the first of its kind, for stage buses in the country.
The Intelligent Commuter Infor mation System (ICIS) display system uses global positioning system to map movement of all Rapid Penang buses and calculate the exact arrival time of each bus.

Rapid Penang chief executive offi cer Azhar Ahmad, who launched the system at the Komtar bus terminal, said it was installed at the bus terminal following the success of its pilot project at the Penang Inter national Airport.
“We first started the system at our kiosk at the airport as a pilot project about a month ago but we decided to go full swing at Komtar due to the huge volume of passengers using bus services there daily.
“This state-of-the-art system is part of Rapid Penang’s efforts to encourage the public to use public transport,” he told reporters at the terminal here yesterday.
He said Rapid Penang now had 75,000 commuters every day and expected a further increase.
“We will later extend this service to other strategic areas through out the state and also explore opportunities to work with shopping complexes where we can install this system.
“Our move is also part of the Government’s National Key Result Areas to improve urban public transport,” he added.
Azhar said they needed to introduce new innovations, which would serve to have more people change their mind set and start using public transport again.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who visited the terminal later in the afternoon, welcomed the move by Rapid Penang to increase the number of buses to 550 from the current 300 by next year to cope with the increasing number of users.
He said the move could help reduce traffic congestion in the city.

Bravo to Rapid Penang for the upgrading of our public transprt system.Expand this system quickly to the Mainland side of Penang too.Better still Rapid Penang shoud consider electric type mini vans to cater to the needs of rural areas for the poorer population to travel.That way …even if there are less passengers Rapid Penang cn still provide the service so as to save on cost.One good example is the motorised beca and the van mobile in Medan,Indonesia.
