Penang bans sports betting

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced a total ban on sports betting today, becoming the first Pakatan Rakyat-led government to introduce such a measure to protest against the new licence.

He said he will instruct the state’s two local councils to issue letters to lottery operators informing them of the new measure.

In Selangor, several local councils had moved to freeze the licence of gambling premises which offer sports betting, in what appears to be a cascading wave of protest against the federal government legislation.

Starting with the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) on Tuesday, the movement appeared to have spread to Selayang and Ampang Jaya yesterday, with both acting to disallow sports betting in their respective jurisdictions.

Letters to Dato’ Chor previously Deputy Finance Minister to restrict special draws of Magnum, Da Ma Cai and Sports Toto had failed. Dato Chor and the current Dato Kong said that PR is playing politics on this and to legalise sports betting and the current bettings is to prevent illegal bookies and to increase income to federal government. May I remind MCA and UMNOs even with legal gambling licence given to Magnum, Sports Toto and Da Ma Cai, illegal bookies still exists. If there are illegal bookies, then it’s the police duties to make arrest!

We are not talking that the ban is as a results of PAS. I feel that MCA and UMNO wanted the non-Muslims to gamble more so that more broken families are created in the society and make Chinese corrupt socially and morally.

I wish to remind MCA that the gambling and drinking is not part of Chinese culture. We do not want the Chinese behave like Hongkies and Taiwanese or Japanese involved in gambling and drinking. So UMNO, ini tax tak HARAM? If it’s haram, make sure you dont use it but reserve to help the Chinese schools. I wish to challenge MCA or UMNO for a debate anytime at Penang Speakers Corner. Just let me know the time and date!
