Penang Top SPM Student Fail to Receive Inaugural National Scholarship

Bukit Mertajam | 040410

Bukit Mertajam Member of Parliament, Chong Eng today held a press conference with Madam Lam Foong Meng, mother of Edwina Tang Chooi Wern who achieved 13A+ in last year’s SPM examination. Edwina, 18, a student of SMK Convent Lebuh Light is the best SPM achiever in Penang. She is also one of the three students nationwide who achieved 13A+.

Nonetheless, Edwina failed to get into the list of 30 top SPM students who were offered the scholarships under the first National Scholarship Program. Madam Lam said her daughter was disappointed for failing to make it into the program even though her results clearly qualify her. Madam Lam at the press conference showed press report showing last year’s SPM top scorers nationwide:

SPM Results Number of students
15A+ 2
14A+ 1
13A+ 3

Madam Lam said that her daughter’s result placed her in the top 6 position and should have qualified to receive the National Scholarship which Prime Minister Najib said will be offered solely based on merits. She said that Edwina aspires to study medicine and the family could not afford the high cost of medical studies. Madam Lam also said that it may be a technical slip and the family is hopeful that Edwina will receive the scholarship.

Madam Chong Eng said that she will write to the Prime Minister’s Department and the Higher Education Ministry to make appeal on behalf of Edwina. She stressed the importance of recognizing and appreciating young local talents who will be leaders of nation-building in the future.
