Concern over conditions of non-Muslim children in Govt welfare home
GEORGE TOWN (Dec 2, 2009) : A backbencher today expressed concern over the conditions of non-Muslim children in government welfare homes in the state.
A. Tanasekharan (DAP- Bagan Dalam) said the children in those homes have been brought up without being allowed to speak in their native tongue, which affects their human rights.
“These children should also be allowed to practise their own religion as well, and not forced to be converted into another religion,” he said.
His concern is in the light of S. Banggarma, 27, a Hindu devotee who was converted to Islam at the age of five while staying at a welfare home in Kepala Batas.
RSN Rayer (DAP – Seri Delima) said there should be a guideline to prepare food for those who of different faith.
Zabariah Wahab (BN – Bertam) then said Tanasekharan had been misinformed on the conditions of those in the welfare homes, especially the Rumah Bakti in Kepala Batas.
“The children are given food based on their needs, and there are not a lot of Chinese and Indian children in Rumah Bakti,” she said.
Tanasekharan replied that the Indian children there should be given a chance to communicate in Tamil among each other.
