Penang not following Selangor plan

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is not following the Selangor government’s plan to enact a law similar to the latter’s proposed Freedom of Information Act.

State Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said the state legal adviser had informed the state government that the matter was under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government.

“The state cannot, at the present time, enact this law,” Abdul Malik told the House when answering a question by assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu (DAP-Tanjung Bungah).

However, he said the state was monitoring the development in Selangor.

Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya (BN-Teluk Bahang) then chided the state for talking about a free flow of information when the state government had banned certain publications from state functions.

“The state government still prohibits certain newspapers from covering state-organised press conferences.

“Why don’t you settle this issue first before talking about the Freedom of Information Act?” Dr Hilmi said.

To this, Abdul Malik said the current state administration was still “miles ahead” of their predecessors in terms of providing freedom of information.

“But this freedom must go two ways and be balanced.

“That is, not only that the state gives information to the media but the media gives the state the right to reply.

“However, some of our local publications are bias in their reporting of state affairs,” Abdul Malik said.
